Eppingerstraße Fellbach
A neighbourhood that brings people together
Not far from Fellbach railway station, on the site of a former suitcase factory, a complex comprising four multi-storey residential buildings constructed using sustainable hybrid timber construction will soon form a link between industrial warehouses, agricultural production areas and small-scale residential developments.
Anyone alighting from the train in Fellbach is greeted by a bright yellow steel sculpture. It guides arrivals towards a cluster of cubic wooden buildings of varying heights, loosely arranged in a row and blending seamlessly into the diverse surroundings. The new neighbourhood on Eppingerstraße emerged from a design competition organised in conjunction with IBA’27. The winning design, developed in collaboration with a housing developer, creates ecologically and socially sustainable living space for a vibrant neighbourhood on the compact site: a dense mix of different housing types and sizes, a community centre with a residents’ café, and cluster flats for people requiring support or with refugee backgrounds promote social diversity and integration. A neighbourhood square with urban gardening areas and communal open spaces creates places for people to meet. Open-plan pergolas and bridges connect the three- to five-storey buildings, whilst an unheated orangery on the roof serves as a weather-protected meeting place and a spacious roof terrace offers views of the Remstal valley. Whether publicly funded or privately owned, budget flats or maisonettes – the climate-neutral buildings offer affordable housing for a variety of lifestyles and exemplify the potential of sustainable, future-proof housing concepts in a neighbourhood with a high mix of uses.
