Dr Gabriele König was born in Stuttgart in 1965 and studied Historical and Cultural Anthropology as well as English Linguistics in Tübingen and York. She has many years of experience in managing cultural institutions and working with partners in the arts, education, politics and administration.

She began her career at Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden. In 1995, she became Managing Director of the Kinder-Akademie Fulda, which she successfully developed into a renowned cultural and educational institution. Other positions have taken her to the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, from 2019 till 2023 she was Head of the Cultural Department in Krefeld and most recently Head of the Cultural Department for the City of Darmstadt.

Since March 2025, Dr Gabriele König is Managing Director of Internationale Bauausstellung 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart GmbH (IBA’27).
